Barbara Michener

(Encaustic, Book Art)

Remote Idaho settings were my laboratory of natural wonders. My childhood included the freedom to explore. I studied the legs on a spider, the way robins’ eggs were arranged in the nest, counted the spots on the bull snake as I held it. The energy of plants and animals weaves its way into my art. Working in my garden provides a continual supply of line, texture, color, and shape that I incorporate into my pieces. Paintings stand in line in my mind waiting for my hands to give them form. I enjoy the encaustic process. Watching it flow and solidify captured me from the first time I picked up the brush dripping with alizarin orange. The extension into three dimensional features adds depth to the communication of the piece. The addition of text, photos, fabric, and plant materials to my creations connects me and the environment to buyers of my work. My art reflects the seasons of nature … ever-changing, while predictably constant.
