Painting, to me, is about interpreting creation. Having been raised in Idaho, it was easy to become connected with the natural beauties of creation. From sun-drenched fields to frosty mountain peaks, the splendor of nature has inspired me. Once inspired, I began to express my sentiments by painting. I believe that painting is not a fixed record of our world. It is not an attempt at grabbing a scene and trying to freeze every blade of grass on canvas. Rather, it is like taking a mood, a feel, or faint aroma of a scene and capturing that certain aspect, dissecting it, and placing it back together so people can see how I viewed it. By choosing to emphasize a specific aspect of a scene, I am better able to express my ideas and feelings about a subject. While I have been influenced from a wide variety of artists ranging from Norman Rockwell to Picasso, my vision tends to lean towards those artists who paint with an “impressionistic” style. To me, a stroke of crimson against green better represents a field of grass then does a picture expressing the thousands of individual blades. Painting is a struggle. I know that no matter how well I try to express my subject it is nothing compared to creation. This constant striving for the impossible is what keeps me going. |
